UFC Greenville: The Korean Zombie Is the Perfect Headliner For UFC Fight Night Events

By Adam Martin

One of the most exciting fighters in all of MMA, "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung has proven time and time again he puts on amazing fights for the fans. That was the case once again in the main event of UFC Greenville, when he needed just 58 seconds to brutally finish Renato Moicano with strikes. It's arguably the biggest win for Jung so far in his MMA career, and it's the kind of win that should bump him into the Top 10 of the UFC's featherweight rankings.

Despite not even being ranked in the Top 10 of the featherweight division, Jung keeps getting main event slots, and there's a reason for that. He might not be the best featherweight in the world, or even one of the top contenders, but he is always in a good fight, and the UFC can always count on him for getting the fans out of their seats. In the ESPN+ era where there seems to be a fight card every weekend, "The Korean Zombie" is the perfect headliner for UFC Fight Night events.

Since returning from a layoff between 2013 and 2017, Jung has had three fights, and he's headlined cards in all of them. He knocked out Dennis Bermudez with punches on a UFC on FS1 card, then was knocked out by Yair Rodriguez on another FS1 card. Then he returned against Moicano on a ESPN+ card. Even before he took his layoff due to mandatory military service in South Korea, we can't forget he headlined UFC 163 against Jose Aldo in a injury TKO loss and also headlined a UFC on FUEL TV card against Dustin Poirier in what was one of the biggest upsets of 2012. Despite just a 3-2 record over his last five fights, all five of them were main events.

The reason for that is that the UFC can count on Jung to put on fights that fans want to see. Win or lose, the guy is always involved in exciting fights. Even if he's not the most technical fighter, or the most impressive physical specimen, he knows how to get the fans fired up. The UFC absolutely loves this guy, and it's easy to see why. When you are running nearly 50 events a year, you need fighters who you can rely on to show up and headline cards in fights with highlight reel potential. He might not be a pay-per-view draw, but hardly anyone is. Yet the UFC still needs headliners for Fight Nights, and Jung is perfect.

As we saw once again at UFC Greenville, anytime "The Korean Zombie" steps into the Octagon it's a must-watch event for hardcore MMA fans. And it's now becoming a must-watch event for casual fans, too. The UFC is recognizing that it has a television star on its hands, and the promotion is taking full advantage of it. Not every fighter is going to become a blockbuster PPV draw like Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey, and Jung won't become that kind of money-making machine either. But that's OK. The UFC needs fighters who excel in made-for-TV events, and Chan Sung Jung is the perfect guy for that. The UFC can count on him putting on amazing fights for the fans, and now we'll wait and see what's next for him. Regardless of who the opponent is, you'd best believe it will be another ESPN+ main event.
